Battles Over Abortion Flare in 2014
"As Republicans return to the campaign trail again after a disappointing 2012 election cycle, pro-life activists say they are emboldened and are looking to turn abortion into an animating issue for the Republican Party in 2014. Their enthusiasm, coming as some in the party have cautioned a turn away from divisive social issues, is rising after a string of gains at the state-level last year. According to research from the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health think tank, states have passed more than 200 restrictions on abortion since 2011, with 22 states enacting at least 70 new measures in 2013 alone." Abortion and Punishment
"Donald J. Trump gave his primary opponents a gift when he said this week that is abortion is outlawed, "there has to be some form of punishment" for the woman. He let them look as if they cared about women. Gov. John Kasich of Ohio responded to Mr. Trump's comments by saying "Of course women shouldn't be punished." Like his fellow Republican presidential candidate Mr. Trump, Mr. Kasich opposes legal abortions except in cases of rape and incest and to save the woman's life." (CLICK TITLE TO READ MORE)
Is Abortion a Human Right?
"The abortion wars in America are typically cast as a battle between choice and life, with one side arguing that a woman's decision about her own body is paramount, and the other, that a developing baby's life trumps all. But in Northern Ireland – where abortion laws are among the strictest in Europe – a judge has attached new rhetoric to the procedure: human rights." (CLICK TITLE TO READ MORE)
Taking it to the States
"Foes of abortion and subsidized birth control had high hopes when Donald Trump was elected president. They got a conservative Supreme Court Justice in Neil Gorsuch, confirmed earlier this year. Republicans barreled ahead with pledges to undo the Affordable Care Act, including its requirement that birth control be considered an "essential health benefit." Donald Trump took 5 Different Positions on Abortions in 3 Days
"But as it turns out — and as it has turned out repeatedly over the course of his life — that was not, in fact, Trump’s final position on the subject. This past week alone, he has held multiple contradicting positions, including that one. So we figured that a timeline was in order, so that you could see the date and time and know, concretely, what Trump’s abortion position was at that moment. Though he might deny it." The Abortion Laws You Don't Hear About
"It's no secret that states have railed against abortion access in the years since 1973, when Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in America. Nearly 900 bills restricting abortions have passed in the past 20 years alone, according to the nation's oldest abortion rights group. Last year, states enacted dozens of new laws, including one in Texas that forced clinic closures across the state. A case challenging that law is now in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court What's less known, though, is a similar state-by-state effort by abortion rights advocates to strengthen access to abortion services and birth control."
